Sol System
Sol: A G2 star of approximately one solar mass.
Sol I: Mercury is home to the system’s heavy industry, using both plentiful
metals for construction and solar radiation for power. Some of Confed’s primary
shipyards are on and orbiting Mercury. The planet’s population is around one
million, all workers.
Sol II: Venus remains uninhabited and largely ignored. Before the discovery of
jump points there was some speculation on terraforming the planet. However,
already habitable worlds, as well as easier-to-transform worlds left Venus in
the dust. Venus Station has a population of a few thousand.
Sol III: Earth is the homeworld of humanity. Just over a billion Terrans call
Earth home. Following a nuclear war at the end of the 21stCentury, and
the Atomic Ice Age, Earth remains considerably colder than before. Glaciers clog
most of the major mountain ranges, and lands above the fiftieth parallels are
largely uninhabited. Major cities include the Confederation’s Capital in New
Delhi, Confed HQ in Damascus as well as naval academies in Houston and Recife.
Earth is defended by several forts in synchronous orbit, as well as Earth
Station at the Earth-Luna L1 point. The station’s population is ten thousand.
Luna is also home to three million humans, with the largest city being
Gatestown.
Sol IV: Mars was first bankrupted by its attempt to terraform the planet. It was
secondly bankrupted when colonists left for better worlds after the
24th Century. It remains a partially-terraformed backwater. Mars Station
orbits near the Sirius Jump Point.
Sol V: Jupiter is the largest of the planets, and its moon system is home to two
million Terrans. Jupiter Station is second only to Earth Station in importance
to the defense of the system. The Trojan Construction Yards are also near
Jupiter. Most of the population lives on Ganymede and Calisto. Europa has been
declared a biological preserve.
Sol VI: Picturesque Saturn is a popular tourist destination in the Sol System.
At any given time, tens of cruise liners can be found in the system.
Sol VII: Uranus is one of the key worlds in the Sol System. Because of its
relatively shallow gravity well and plentiful supply of fusion fuels, it is home
to the Outer System Mining Company. A hundred thousand Terrans live around the
planet, operating scoop ships as well as refineries.
Sol VIII: Neptune is the outermost planet, and also a mining world. Most of its
twenty thousand inhabitants live in Portway on Triton. Five thousand more live
on Neptune Station, which stands guard over an orbiting Jump Point.
Jump Points
To Alpha Centauri: Inside Mercury’s orbit at a distance of 0.2 AU from Sol
To Sirius: Orbiting Mars
To Proxima: In high polar orbit of Jupiter
To Talos: Orbiting Neptune
To Enyo: At the Sol-Jupiter L5 Point
To Polaris: In the Asteroid Belt, around 3.0 AU from Sol.
